USDA Loans: The Debt-to-Income Catch Nobody Mentions
October 30, 2026

Quick Summary
USDA loans get attention for 0% down in eligible rural areas. The part people miss is that the debt-to-income limits are often much lower than FHA. That can shrink the homes that fit your budget. For some buyers it is still a great fit, so it is worth looking at every option side by side.

I want to talk about something that came up overnight that doesn't get talked about much. I have a client who has a down payment but is interested in a USDA loan.
USDA loans are attractive because they're 0% down in eligible rural areas, and the income limits usually aren't too strict. But what catches people is that the debt-to-income ratios are much lower.
On an FHA loan, the housing payment ratio may go up to around 46%. With USDA, it's often closer to 29%.
So people fall in love with the idea of 0% down in the country, then find the budget it allows doesn't match the homes out there. For some people USDA is amazing. Sometimes there's just a catch that makes it harder than it sounds.
